Affirmations Based Upon Scripture
for the 40 Days of Lent
Jesus is risen! He is risen, indeed!
We did it! We used God's Word to affirm ourselves and our faith each day of Lent this year. Oh, what a journey with God this has been! We started this journey back in February. Whether you joined me for one day or for the entire season, thank you for being a part of this journey. Scripture speaks! And our God speaks to us through the Holy Spirit and through Scripture. Feel free to look back on these any time throughout the year.

Give this a try! Each day speak one of these promises to yourself throughout the day. Before you disregard this as silly, please realize that for most people, a majority of the words we speak to ourselves each day are negative and actually self-sabotaging. Let's change the channel on these negative thoughts by filling our minds with positive promises from scripture.Use these during your quiet time. Repeat the verse and the thoughts to yourself throughout the day. The goal is to defeat the enemy by planting God's Word and positive affirmations in our hearts and in our minds.*The affirmations will be posted with the newest at the top of the page. Day #40 Rejoice!
"For the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd; 'he will lead them to springs of living water.' 'And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.'" Revelation 7:17
He is risen! He is risen, indeed!I will rejoice today! Jesus has conquered death, and He is seated at the right hand of God. This year has been challenging, and yet God is willing to hold us close and wipe away our tears. I will draw near to Almighty God this Easter.
Day #39 Perseverance
"Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of God." ~Hebrews 12:1-2
I will cast aside sin and obstacles as I let Jesus be my guide while I persevere in this race. Jesus suffered on the cross, defeated death, and rose from the dead. Hallelujah!
"Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God's grace in its various forms. If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen." ~I Peter 4:10-11
I will seek ways to serve the Lord today. Keeping in mind Jesus' sacrifice on the cross, I will confidently share the Good News of His resurrection.
Day #37 Live at Peace
"If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone." ~Romans 12:18
As I go through this day, I will take deep breaths and focus on God's loving grace for me. With this focus, I will be able to offer grace and patience to others. When challenges arise, as much as it depends on me, I will live at peace with everyone.
Day #36 Be Prepared
"But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect." ~I Peter 3:15
This day I declare Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior of my life. As I reflect on God's work in my life, I ask the Holy Spirit to guide me in creating a response to this question: "Why do you believe in Jesus?" As I give my story, I will be sharing HIS Story.
Day #35 Wisdom
"If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you"
Day #34 Renewal
"Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal." ~II Corinthians 4:16-18
Today I am able to see "mountains" as "light and momentary troubles." I am thankful for the perspective that the Holy Spirit gives me. I am renewed knowing that the God who has gotten me through the past will be with me today and into the future.
Day #33 Inseparable
"For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord." ~Romans 8:38-39
As we approach Holy Week, I smile and breathe in peace while reading this promise. I rest and yet rejoice that today I can not, will not, be separated from the love of Almighty God. Hallelujah!
Day #32 Training
"Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air. ~ I Corinthians 9:24-26
Today I will focus on spiritual training by taking time to pray and to reflect, to read God's Word and to surrender to God's will for my life. What a workout for my soul!
Day #31 Guard My Heart
"My son, pay attention to what I say; turn your ear to my words. Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart; for they are life to those who find them and health to one's whole body. Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it." ~Proverbs 4:23
God's Word holds the key. I will make time today to read the Bible and hold the words close throughout the day. The wisdom of these precious words will guard my heart and guide my interactions throughout the day.
Day #30 Contentment
"I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength." ~Philippians 4:12-13
Day #29 Press On
"Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus." ~Philippians 3:13-14
The past will not hinder me today. I will build upon past experiences and the wisdom gained, but I will not spend this day wallowing in regret. I press on today, freed from the past and excited about the opportunities that God will put before me this day.
Day #28 A Quiet Life
"And to make it your ambition to lead a quiet life: You should mind your own business and work with your hands, just as we told you, so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody." ~I Thessalonians 4:11-12
Today I will be discerning in order to put my energy into those activities to which the Lord is leading me. I have permission to say "No" to activities that just make me "busy." I trust the Spirit to guide me in this quiet life.*"busy"--Being Under Satan's Yoke
Day #27 Thoughts
"Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable--if anything is excellent or praiseworthy--think about such things." ~ Philippians 4:8
On this day I will take captive my wandering thoughts. I will nurture my mind like a beautiful garden and weed out the destructive thoughts that can corrupt my mind. I will focus on God's goodness and love in order to fill my mind with that which is lovely and praiseworthy.
Day #26 Maturing
"For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love." ~2 Peter 1:5-7
I will commit time and energy into growing my faith. Accepting Jesus Christ as my Savior was just the beginning of this exciting walk with the Lord. I will put effort into growing closer to God today.
Day #25 Priorities
"Jesus replied: 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it; 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'" ~Matthew 22:37-39
This day I will love. I will love God, and I will love others. Because I choose to love, I am willing to serve. I will examine and adjust my priorities in order to follow Jesus' advice: love.
Day #24 Transform
"Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is--his good, pleasing and perfect will." ~Romans 12:2
I will focus on renewing my mind today. I release myself from trying to fit into the mold of this world. Living by God's grace and love, instead of seeking the world's affection and praise, frees me to follow God's good and perfect will.
Day #23 Shine
"Do everything without grumbling or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, 'children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.' Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky." ~Philippians 2:14-15
I will make every effort to be positive and uncomplaining. I will look upon challenges as opportunities and resist any urge to grumble or complain. Looking at the bright side will allow God's light to shine into the situation and the world.
Day #22 Be Still
"He [God] says, 'Be still, and know that I am God...'" ~Psalm 46:10a
This Psalm reassures me that God is my help, my refuge, and my strength. Today I will listen to God and heed Him as He instructs me to be still and rest in the knowledge that He is in charge. I will resist the urge to be busy and active all the time, realizing that it is in the stillness that I can hear Almighty God.
Day #21 Fruit of the Spirit
"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control." ~Galatians 5:22-23a
I acknowledge Jesus as my Savior, and I welcome the Holy Spirit into my heart. I desire for my soul to exist with the Spirit. Today I will yield to God's will so that the fruit of the Holy Spirit will be evident in my thoughts, words, and actions.
Day #20 Attitude
"Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others." ~Philippians 2:3-4
I will face today by setting my heart and my mind to Christ Jesus. I understand that my witness lies in my treatment of and encounters with others. Given that, I submit to the guidance of the Holy Spirit in my relationships. I ask the Spirit to open my eyes and my heart to the needs of others.
Day #19 Focus
"However, I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me--the task of testifying to the good news of God's grace." ~Acts 20:24
Today I will focus on eternal goals. I will cut through the many activities that vie for my attention and put my time, talents, and energies to doing the Lord's work. I will make every effort to be less "busy" in order to hear God's voice and testify to the good news of his grace.
Day #18 Be Like a Tree
"Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither--whatever they do prospers." ~Psalm 1:1-3Today I will be like a tree. I will stretch tall and strong and yet be flexible. I will be nurtured by the Holy Spirit and God's Word, and I will keep company with those who also delight in the Lord. I will be grateful for the positive people in my life.
Day #17 Set Apart
"Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart...Then the Lord reached out his hand and touched my mouth and said to me, 'I have put my words in your mouth.'" ~Jeremiah 1:5, 9
I savor the truth of these verses. Almighty God has set each of us apart for a particular purpose. He is willing to give me words to say. I acknowledge that at times I struggle with confidence of knowing both what to say and how to say it. I will put those fears aside as I trust that God will guide me and guide my words each day.
Day #16 Seek Knowledge
"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, And knowledge of the Holy One is understanding." ~Proverbs 9:10
Day #15 In Tune
"Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, 'This is the way; walk in it.'" ~Isaiah 30:21
I trust in this promise today; I believe that God will guide me. I am encouraged that no matter what or who is at my right or at my left, the Holy Spirit will be there to guide me. Today I will listen closely for the Spirit's promptings.

Day #14 Choose
"But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve...But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord." ~Joshua 24:15
Today I submit to serve the Lord. I will ignore selfish desires and not give into temptations from worldly distractions. I will go out of my way to serve the Lord and pray for each member of my family. I will also support others on their spiritual walks as God leads me.

Day #13 Speech

Today I will use my speech to bless others. I realize that the Holy Spirit will guide my words and will also guide my listening. I will face each conversation this day with grace. I will especially focus on being able to answer questions about my faith and my Lord.

Day #12 Soar

God is the secret. God is the answer. Today I will draw my strength from the Lord. Without God, I am sure to stumble and fall; I will grow tired and weary. With God, I am free to soar! I will not let the issues of the world wear me down. I will rest in the power and strength of the LORD.

God is the Almighty. He is the Creator of all. I praise the Lord. Today I will take time to consider the countless blessings in my life. I give thanks to God for each of these blessings and for His enduring love and goodness. I am grateful that God is at work in my life.

I love God's Word. I know that it has been provided to give me both guidance and comfort. I will heed God's Word and listen for the wisdom that the Holy Spirit provides as God shapes my heart and my soul through the Bible.

Almighty God cares about the condition of my heart. I surrender to God to work on my heart. I welcome the Holy Spirit to rid my heart of negativity and bitterness and to fill my heart with peace, gratitude, and love. My heart and my life are in good hands, and I will trust in God.

I will spend today being joyful. I acknowledge that while I will face challenges and trials today, I will focus on the growth that is going to come from these challenges. God wants me to develop perseverance and grow stronger in my faith. Choosing joy in the Lord will allow me to be a witness through whatever I might face today.

Today I will try to alleviate some of the busy-ness in my life in order to follow God's Word. I will focus on what the Lord requires of me: acting justly, sharing mercy, and walking humbly in communion with Almighty God.

Today I am comforted knowing that God is my Shepherd. I acknowledge that I have all that I need because God is my Provider. The Almighty God even takes care to find resting places for me. In addition to caring for my physical needs, God refreshes and renews my soul. Today I will heed the Lord as He guides me.

I am ready to face the challenges of this day, and I am ready to grow spiritually during this Lenten season. God reassures me daily with the Holy Spirit which gives me power for each day. While the Holy Spirit blesses me with love, I am also blessed and instructed in self-discipline in order for me to grow. I will be bold, not timid, today about sharing God's influence in my life.

"He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart, yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end." ~Ecclesiastes 3:11
I am going to be intentional to look for the beauty in the world today. I will appreciate each of the wonders of creation. I am also comforted today knowing that the God of creation is in charge of my day. I acknowledge that the longing that I feel at times throughout the day is a reminder for me to look forward to eternity with God in heaven.

I will go through this day with confidence knowing that God is with me each moment. I will be courageous and strong as I face whatever challenges I might encounter today. I will avoid being afraid and discouraged by repeating this promise from Almighty God.
